Indians Invade Cooperstown

The Indians arrived at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown on a beautiful Wednesday morning on June 27th, ready to play against the Adirondack Rattlers.

First up, Coach Carroll announced that Emil Pape had been selected as Captain of the Indians and would also start on the mound.

After striking out the first batter on 3 pitches, Pape walked the next batter. He was promptly thrown out attempting a steal by Catcher James DiMartino, with 2nd baseman James Carroll applying the quick tag. The next batter also walked, but was picked off first by DiMartino, with 1st baseman John Salvagione applying the tag. That effectively shut down the Rattlers running game.

Zach Egan started off the bottom of the first with a sharp single and quickly stole 2nd and 3rd base. With two outs, Emil Pape blasted a double into left centerfield for the RBI. John DiSanto followed with an RBI single and later stole home to pace the Indians to a 3-0 lead. Pape gave up one run in the 2nd and pitched a scoreless 3rd to complete his pitching line - 3 innings, 1 run and 6 strikeouts.
The bottom of the 3rd opened up with a walk to Carroll and a one out single by Pape. Carroll and Pape pulled off a double steal and eventually scored on RBIs by Mike Lapinski and Chris Morgan.
Lapinski came on in the 4th and pitched two scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the Indians offense continued to produce, scoring 3 in the 4th on a double by Egan, a fielder's choice RBI by DiMartino, a single by Pape and a 2 RBI double by DiSanto. 2 more runs crossed the plate in the 5th on singles by Lapinski, Teddy Derham and Egan.
Chris Morgan came on in the 6th and John Salvagione relieved DiMartino behind the plate. After hitting the first batter and walking the 2nd, Coach Russo went out to review mechanics. Chris promptly induced a 4-6-3 double play and struck out the next batter on 3 pitches, allowing only 1 run.

The 6th inning saw 3 more runs scored by the Indians has Pape continued his hot hitting with a 1 out single. With 2 outs, Lapinski singled and Morgan crushed a triple into the right centerfield gap. Derham followed with an RBI single.

John DiSanto pitched the 7th inning and with a big lead, was told to "pitch to the scoreboard". Despite giving up singles to the first two hitters, DiSanto settled down with defensive help from Egan at short, Carroll at 3rd and Lapinski at 1st.

The boys scored 4 more runs in the 7th on a lead off walk by Egan and a two out single by DiMartino. Pape finished off a 5-5 day with another RBI single (he also scored 5 runs on the day). DiSanto, Lapinski and Derham all singled to close out the scoring and give the Indians a 17-6 lead.
Egan came on to finish off the game. After a walk and a triple, he also settled down, getting the first out on an unassisted grounder to 1st and striking out the final two batters for a final score of 17-8.
We could not have been any prouder of the boys, as they showed hustle, teamwork, unity and sportsmanship. We expect it to carry on over into the regular season.

Our thanks to Indians President Kevin Gorman for securing the spot, arranging for the rooms and providing an outstanding venue for the boys to play. Additional thanks to "photographers" Tom Lapinski and Emil Pape Sr and all of the family and friends who came up to Cooperstown to cheer the boys on to victory.

Finally, a thanks to the Kyles - Kyle Carroll and Kyle Cashman, for working the scoreboard. Hopefully, they represent the future of the Indians.

Summer 2007

June 10th

Despite a 10-1 loss to the LI Owls up at the St. Dominic's Complex, the Indians played very well and got strong pitching from Emil Pape. The boys had runners on base every inning, but just couldn't push more than one run across the plate.

Mike Levko went 2-3 and Emil Pape was 2-3 with a double and a run scored. Elijah Rustin knocked in the games only run with a fielder's choice.

In game 2, the Indians looked more like themselves as they became more aggressive in the field and at the plate. The boys scored 3 runs in the 2nd on singles by Elijah Rustin, John DiSanto, Teddy Derham and Mike Lapinski. Once again, the Indians had runners on base in every inning but the Owl pitching proved too much to plate any more runs.

Zach Egan provided solid defense at 2nd base and Elijah Rustin played well in left field.

The Coach Carroll Player of the Game was Emil Pape, who pitched well in the first game and contributed 3 hits, including two doubles and a run scored.

Stay tuned for announcements regarding our next practice.

Next game:
Oceanside vs South Shore Indians on Friday 6/15; 6pm @ Tully Park. Please be at the game by 5:00pm.

Opening Day - Summer 2007

June 3rd:

Despite an opening triple by Elijah Rustin and a run scoring single by Eric Stone, things did not bode well for the Indians as they opened up the summer campaign against the LI Sound. The boys never seemed to get in sync, on the field, at bat or on the mound as they took the loss 14-2. We anticipate things will improve once we get back on the practice field.

Coach Carroll Player of the Game was Elijah Rustin, who in addition to the triple to lead off the game, played well in the outfield.

Summer Season Opening Day

Despite the threat of rain, opening night started on time at Tully Field. Unfortunately, our always reliable pitching had a tough go, as we absorbed the loss to the LI Sound, 14-2.

Elijah Rustin opened the game with a scorching line drive into the left centerfield gap for a triple and scored on a single by Eric Stone. The 2nd run scored on heads up and aggressive base running by Emil Pape.

Defensively, Eric Stone made three excellent catches in centerfield, showing off his extraordinary range and threw out a runner at the plate. Shortstop Chris Morgan also cut down a runner at the plate, with catcher James DiMartino blocking the plate and applying the tag.

Game two was rained out.

The Coach Carroll Player of the Game goes to Eric Stone for his RBI single and excellent defensive play in both Centerfield and at Shortstop.

Next Game:
Sunday, 6/10: Indians vs. LI Owls; 1pm (2) @ St. Dominic's Field. Running and stretching will begin at 12:00pm. Please do not be late.

IMPORTANT MANDATORY MEETING

The Coach Carroll Player of the Tournament was James DiMartino, who continued his hot hitting, played well in the outfield, 3rd base and continued to strike fear into the hearts of all would be base stealers behind the plate.

Games 5 & 6 (May 6)

After a tough first game loss (18-2) to Garden City, the Indians came back and played a fantastic second game, with good pitching, hustle and some timely hits. Unfortunately, a 7th inning rally by Garden City handed the boys their 3rd loss of the season by a score of 7-4. The Indians are now 2-3-1.

Good pitching in game 2 by Jimmy Milano and Eric Stone and some nice defensive work at 3rd base by Teddy Derham. Eric also had 2 doubles and two runs scored on the day.

Games 3 & 4 April 29

The Indians' bats continued to produce, but swirling, winds, a blinding sun and a few controversial calls were too much to overcome, as the Indians tied Port Washington 7-7 and then lost 10-11.

It was good to see Mike Tarone come down, despite being on the DL with a break in his hand. We wish Mike a speedy recovery. Also missing was Chris Morgan, who attended services for his friends who lost their lives in a car accident over the weekend. Out thoughts and prayers go out to Chris and his friends' families.

Game 1 produced some timely hitting, as Elijah Rustin went 3-4 with a run scored and 1 stolen base. John DiSanto was also 3-4 with 1 stolen base and 2 runs scored and James Carroll knocked in 2 runs with a single in the 6th. Down by 2 in the bottom of the 7th, Zach Egan led off with a double and scored on Elijah's double. John DiSanto followed with a run scoring single to tie the game.
In game two, Elijah continued his hot hitting, going 4-4 with a Home Run and 4 runs scored and Emil Pape contributed 3 hits and 3 runs scored.

The Coach Carroll "Player of the Day" goes to James DiMartino, who had 4 hits but more importantly was lights out behind the plate in game 1. After being called safe on 2 wild pitch/passed balls (both of which were controversial), our opponents didn't even attempt another steal. We could very well be looking at potentially the best catcher in the league.

The most important part of the day was that the Indians came together as a team and played with class and dignity. Be proud of yourselves!

Next Practice...
Tuesday May 1, 5:00pm at Giese Park.

Next Game...
Sunday May 6, 9am at ST Paul's vs Garden City. Please be there no later than 8:15am.

Opening Day Sweep

How about those Indians!

Chris Morgan opened the year on the mound for the Indians and threw 4 strong innings of 1 run ball. Timely hitting by John DiSanto, Anthony Page and Teddy Derham helped contribute two runs in the 3rd inning as did hitting by Teddy, Emil Pape and Elijah Rustin in the 5th. At the end of 6 1/2 innings, The Indians found themselves tied with the Babylon Bulldogs at 5-5. John Salvagione opened the inning with a walk and stole second. With one out, that man Teddy came through again, stroking a game winning double into the ally for a 6-5 victory.

In game two, the Indians opened up the first with 11 runs en route to a 13-2 victory. Strong pitching by starter Emil Pape and great hitting by all the boys, as 11 different players scored a run.

My thanks to Coach Ed Russo for taking the helm in my absence and to coaches Keith Wright and Tom Lapinski for their help.

The Coach Carroll "Player of the Day" goes to Teddy Derham, who went a combined 4-4, with a BB, HBP, 2 stolen bases and 3 runs scored.

Next practice is scheduled for Tuesday (4/24), 5pm at Giese Park.

Spring Training - 2nd Practice

Our 2nd practice went well and the team is now set with 14 full time players. Returning pitchers Chris Morgan, Mike Lapinski and Zach Egan form the front end of what should be an excellent starting rotation. Returning shortstop Elijah Rustin's steady glove and experience should keep the infield in check.

Next practice will be on Saturday, April 7th, 10am at Giese Park. Our first game will be in Seaford on Sunday, April 15th a 9am. Directions to the field are pending.

Spring Training (13/14 year old team)

Our first practice went quite well. The boys quickly shook off any rust from the off season, so it is apparent they have been working out during the winter. Team looks good with a solid 5 man rotation. Returning first baseman James Carroll and catcher James DiMartino bring their leadership and experience as they lead the Indians to opening day, which will be on April 15th.

New coaches Ed Russo and Steven Carroll were a welcomed addition to our first practice, quickly utilizing their vast baseball knowledge to correct a few mechanical flaws.

Next practice is Sat March 31st at the HMS - small gym at 9am.
